Dawn on this stretch is ironwood needles across the grass and the sound of surf carrying up from Malaekahana before anything else is awake. Island Scape North Shore starts there — mowing, edging, trimming and cleanup for yards from Laie on down the coast while the ground is still cool and holding dew. Needle and leaf drop is constant under those trees, so clearing is half the job and mowing is the other half. Winter swells make the whole shoreline loud; summer goes flat and glassy, and the grass grows straight through both. A yard cut at first light still looks cut at sundown.
