Late afternoon in Keaau comes in green. The light drops under the albizia canopy along the highway and every yard goes a shade deeper, and that is the hour Ashton's Landscape & Tree Service likes to be finishing: hedges squared, shrub lines pulled back off the walkways, the last of the cut grass raked clear. Work runs from the lots near Shipman Park out along the long straight roads of Orchidland, where a lawn can go from tidy to jungle in the space of two rainy weeks. Mowing and edging here follow a rhythm the rain sets rather than the calendar. The reward is backing out of a driveway and seeing the whole yard hold its shape against all that growing.
