Before the sun lifts clear of the water off Kapaʻa Beach Park, the grass along the coast is heavy with dew and a little salt, and the first pass of the morning lays a clean stripe pointing at the ocean. Alii Landscaping & Maintenance keeps up mowing, edging, string trimming, hedge and shrub work, weed control and green-waste haul-away for yards in Kapaʻa and along the stretch of Kūhiō Highway on either side of town. Grass here never takes a month off — the trades keep it green, the rain keeps it coming — so the work is weekly, and it is measured in the straight line where turf meets a driveway. There is a plain kind of joy in finishing a lawn before the heat arrives: walkway blown clear, last clipping carried off, the yard sitting quiet in the new light.
