First light comes up between the Mokulua islands and lays a gold strip across the water before most of Kailua is awake. Lēʻahi Landscaping starts in that hour, mowing, edging and trimming yards from the Kaʻiwa Ridge side down toward the flats, with cleanups when a place has gotten ahead of itself. Early is the kind hour here: the ground still cool, the wind not yet up, the cut lines crisp before the heat sets in. A lawn finished at seven in the morning holds its shape all day. Locking a gate behind a yard that looks better than it did an hour ago is a small thing, and it is the reason to be out that early.
