Kahuku wakes early, the trade winds combing down off the Ko'olau while the old sugar mill stands rust-red against a sky still making up its mind about morning. Filipino Yard Boy works those first cool hours, when the grass is heavy with dew and the mower leaves a clean dark stripe behind it. Salt air off Kahuku Point and the rain that blows in sideways from the sea push growth hard out here, so mowing, trimming and edging run on a rhythm this coast sets rather than a calendar. There is a real satisfaction in the last pass along a red-dirt driveway, that thin deliberate seam where yard stops and road begins, and in hauling every clipping off so the lawn is left with nothing but its own color. From the flats near Malaekahana down through Laie and Hau'ula, this is yard work done plainly and finished all the way to the corners.
