Prudent Pruning

About Prudent Pruning

Holualoa wakes in sunshine, the Kona coast laid out far below and Hualālai rising at its back, and by mid-afternoon a soft gray cloud often drifts over the coffee slopes like a parasol. Prudent Pruning makes good use of those bright early hours, shaping shrubs, thinning hedges that have gotten away from their owners and mowing yards along the village's winding upland roads. On this mountainside everything grows with enthusiasm, hibiscus and ginger and fruit trees all leaning toward the light, and a thoughtful cut lets each plant breathe again. The art is in restraint: a hedge that keeps its natural shape, a glimpse of ocean opened back up, grass trimmed close beside a lava-rock wall. When the gallery doors along Mamalahoa Highway swing open for the day, a neatly pruned garden nearby looks like part of the show.
