Hilo's quietest hour is the one before anyone else is up: the bay flat, the streetlights still burning down Kīlauea Avenue, the grass heavy with the night's rain. Grass Ninjas start early on purpose — mowing, edging and trimming while the air is cool, clippings bagged and gone before the heat and the traffic arrive. On this island the growing season never actually stops, so the schedule is the strategy; miss a round in June and you are cutting hay instead of lawn. Quick in, clean lines, nothing left on the walk, and the homeowner steps outside to a finished yard. That is the whole trick, and it is a trick built out of showing up.
