Rain falls on Hilo most nights, and by dawn the Wailuku River runs loud enough to hear from the road above Rainbow Falls. East Side Tree Services works the wet side out of town, up the Hamakua coast through Papaikou and back into the Kaumana neighborhoods where the forest presses against the fences. Soaked ground and fast growth make heavy trees, so the crew thins and shapes them until a canopy carries its own weight instead of tearing itself apart. A removal is figured backward from where the wood needs to land — a tight yard, a gulch edge, a line strung right through the branches. Storm work is a phone call at an odd hour and a driveway cut open before the workday starts.
