Late light comes sideways through the coconut grove at Waipouli, and the fronds throw long moving shadows across the lawns on the ocean side of Kapaa. The Island Gardener works to that hour often, finishing yards in the cool of the afternoon: mowing, edging along paths and drive aprons, trimming the tight ground around trunks and garden borders. Hedges and shrubs are cut to a shape that suits the plant instead of fighting it, and the clippings are gathered up and taken away. Salt air and sun make their own demands on a coastal lawn, and the mowing schedule bends to meet them. What lingers after the last pass is simple — even grass, sharp margins, a yard that feels finished as the light goes.
