Morning in Fern Forest arrives as mist rather than sun, moss beading on the fence posts, the whole subdivision a wet and vivid green. Queen's Garden works those cool upland lots — mowing, trimming, weeding, cutting back what has leaned in over a path, and carrying off the clippings — in a rainforest that is forever making more of itself. Grass grown at this elevation comes up thick and heavy and asks for a slow, deliberate pass rather than a quick one. When it is finished the difference is immediate: an open yard, a clear walkway, and the tree ferns given a boundary to stand behind. Up here that boundary has to be redrawn often, which is exactly what regular visits are for.
