October is the honest month in Winder. Nights turn cool over the courthouse square downtown, the humidity finally loosens its grip, and fescue wants to go into ground that is still warm. Chris Savage Lawn Care Inc. spends the season aerating, overseeding, mowing a little lower and hauling off the first real leaf drop. By late November the yards that got that work are the ones still holding color while everything around them has gone to straw. It is a season that pays you back slowly, which is a good enough reason to take it seriously.
