Southeast of town the pines open up around the lake at Laura S. Walker, and the light there in early evening turns the water the color of sweet tea. Double-O Mow & Mo works the yards on that side of Waycross and out along the county roads — mowing, edging, trimming, blowing down, and the odd jobs that come with keeping a place in order. Longleaf drops its straw wherever it pleases, sun and shade split most lawns right down the middle, and a good cut accounts for both. Two passes, a defined border, and a driveway with nothing left on it: that's the whole ambition, repeated every week of the season.
