Around three o'clock most summer afternoons a thunderhead piles up over the flatwoods south of town, drops an inch on Valdosta in twenty minutes, and drags off toward Lake Park. South Georgia Lawn Care works around that weather and behind it — mowing and edging between the storms, string trimming, blowing the walks, and hauling away the limbs and cones a hard rain shakes loose. The territory runs the way people actually drive it: Valdosta out to Hahira and Dasher, down to Lake Park, north toward Adel. Grass in this part of the state never truly quits, so the route does not either. There is something good about pulling away from a yard that was a mess an hour ago and now looks like the storm never touched it.
