South of Thomasville the Red Hills roll off toward the Florida line in long pine-topped waves, and the sandy ground under them drinks fast — which is why water is a subject people around here take personally. Velasquez Landscape & Irrigation works on both sides of that equation: irrigation lines put in and repaired, heads set and adjusted so the spray lands on the lawn instead of the driveway, and the landscape itself planted, mulched and maintained. In a Rose City summer the afternoon builds up dark by four o'clock and drops an inch of rain in twenty minutes, and by Thursday the yards are thirsty again. So the mowers run, the edges are cut back sharp, the beds are turned and topped, and the shrubs are shaped to the house. The best part of the job is standing at the street afterward while the zones cycle on, watching the whole yard come up green and even in the low evening light.
