By late April the crepe myrtles along the Blue Mile are leafing out and the block around the Bulloch County courthouse looks freshly drawn. Statesboro Southern Scapes, Inc. spends that season shaping ground: beds edged and mulched, shrubs cut back into line, lawns mowed and trimmed, spring cleanups hauling off a winter's worth of pine straw and fallen limbs. The sandy soil here is forgiving, and a bed carved into it takes an edge like a single knife stroke. What lasts is the outline — the curve of a bed set against the turf, still crisp when August comes. The work reaches across Statesboro and out toward Portal, Pulaski and Brooklet.
