Out toward East Beach and Gould's Inlet the wind comes off the water carrying salt, and lawns on that end of the island grow tough, sandy and stubborn about it. Oceanside Land Services takes them on with mowing, trimming the sandspur edges back, cutting a border along the drives and blowing the walkways clear of clippings and grit. October is the reward month: the heat finally lets go, the light goes long over the dunes, and a yard cut that week holds its shape for days. Turf that stays on a schedule stays even, while turf that doesn't goes patchy fast in this soil. The crew works the island and the mainland close by, including Brunswick, Sea Island and Jekyll Island.
