Late in the day the St. Marys River runs tea-dark past St. George, and the cypress throw long shadows over water that barely seems to move. Charlie George Landscaping Inc. works the yards and beds above that bend — mowing and edging, shaping planting beds, hauling off the clippings and limbs a season leaves behind. Down here the growing runs long and generous, so a landscape is less a project than a conversation you keep having with the ground. The reward is the walk back to the truck at dusk, looking at a bed line that finally reads clean against the grass. It is small, particular work, and St. George is a place that notices it.
