There is a kind of Senoia yard made entirely of small pleasures — a picket fence, hydrangeas leaning over it, a strip of grass that has to be perfect because there is not much of it. The Lawn Gnome likes those best: mowing the little runs, trimming around every post and downspout, edging the walk so the whole thing looks framed. Tight yards take longer per square foot than wide ones, and that is fine, because the payoff is a lot that looks composed from the sidewalk. In fall the leaves get pulled out of the corners where they like to hide. Small place, full attention.
