By one o'clock on Whitemarsh Island the tide is high in the creek and nobody is outside who does not have to be. Bud The Yard Doctor is out anyway, working shade to shade, hat brim down, trimming the hedges back square and running the mower in long even passes while the marsh gives off that warm sulfur-and-salt smell. Mowing, trimming, edging, shrub work, and a full blow-off of drive and walkway are the standing menu. Salt air and sandy ground are hard on a lawn out here, so the fix is attention paid often rather than heroics paid once. The route covers Savannah proper and the island neighborhoods east of the Wilmington River.
