Rutledge is a handful of blocks beside the railroad, with the pines of Hard Labor Creek State Park standing just out of town. Mornings there are still enough to hear a mower start three streets over, which is a fair argument for beginning early and working neat. The route is mowing, trimming around posts, trunks and porch corners, edging the walks, and clearing the sidewalks with the blower before moving on. Morgan County summers run long, so the grass gets cut on its own schedule, week after week, from April until the nights cool. A yard done right in a town this size gets noticed by everyone who drives past, and that is the point.
