On spring mornings the fog settles into the valley around Rock Spring and stays put until the sun climbs high enough over the ridge to burn it away. Yards By Marty gets going about the time the grass comes clear of it — mowing, edging, line trimming, hedge trimming and carrying off the clippings and limbs. The first cut of the year is its own kind of pleasure: the mower loading up, the smell coming off the deck, the yard suddenly looking like somebody lives there on purpose. The rest of the season is keeping that feeling going, week after week. Rock Spring and the towns down the valley get the same attention either way.
