Midsummer storms stack up over the pines south of town and come through Roberta in a hurry, and by the next morning every lawn in Crawford County has grown another inch. The answer is a mower that shows up anyway — deck cleaned, blades turning, wheel tracks laid straight across the wet green. Trimming follows the fence lines and the mailbox posts, the blower clears the walk and the drive, and the beds get their edge back. Down in the creek bottoms the shade lawns come along slower, so they are given their own pace. What's left at the end of a route is a string of yards that look easy to keep, which is the whole trick of it.
