West of Pooler the subdivisions thin out and the land goes back to pine flatwoods, dark-water creeks and yards with room to stretch. Grass out there grows unevenly — sun, sand, a low wet corner that stays soft for days after a rain — and it takes somebody who reads the ground before dropping a deck onto it.
