The first light of the day comes in low and slow, and it finds the dew still sitting on the grass around Oxford. Green Groves starts around then, mowing and edging while the dew is still holding, working the beds and mulch before the heat makes the afternoon a negotiation. Ground can roll, so a lawn has to be read before it is cut — the slope, the wet corner, the spot that scalps if you rush it. Limbs and leaves come off after the storms and again when the hardwoods turn. A yard kept this way looks less managed than simply at ease, and that is harder to get than it sounds.
