Northeast Bleckley in October is pine on one side of the road and open field on the other, with the light coming in low and gold across both. A country lot asks for more than a pass with a mower; it asks that somebody handle the corners, the ditch bank, the place where grass turns into woods. Getting that boundary right is what makes a homeplace look tended instead of surrounded. Fall is a fine time for it — days long enough to finish, cool enough to enjoy finishing.
