Nevils is a crossroads, a community club and a lot of good farmland in between, and on a spring evening the whole place smells like cut grass and turned dirt. Floyd's Tree Service runs the roads out from there — the Black Creek bottoms, the fields toward Denmark and Brooklet, houses with an oak in the yard older than the porch it shades. The work is removal when a tree has gone hollow, trimming when it has simply gotten ahead of itself, pruning when it needs guiding instead of cutting. After a line of weather crosses that flat country and drops limbs everywhere, they clear it out and stack it neat, carrying off whatever nobody wants left behind. It is useful work, and a yard that looks right when the truck pulls away is the receipt for it.
