Out past the edge of town the highway runs between hayfields and pine, and on a late-August evening the light goes long and gold across every one of them while the cicadas hand the shift over to the crickets. The Yardfather, LLC works right up to that hour when the day allows, mowing, trimming and edging yards around Milledgeville until the grass stops throwing dust and starts holding dew. Big lots, small lots, ground that rolls a little and ground that doesn't — each gets cut at a height that suits it and finished around the trees. There is something satisfying about closing the tailgate on a place where every blade lines the same direction and the walkway edge is a clean seam. Then the truck heads back in through town with the windows down.
