The old Midway church and its walled cemetery sit under live oaks that have been dropping moss on this ground for a very long time. Bud The Yard Doctor works the yards nearby, diagnosing what a lawn needs — a lower cut, a cleared bed, a hedge brought back into shape — and then doing it. Coastal shade and sandy soil make for uneven turf, so trimming and edging matter as much as the mow itself. Leaves, limbs and moss come off the grass and go with the truck. At dusk, with the oaks going black against the sky, a yard finished properly holds its shape in silhouette.
