Spring reaches this part of south Georgia before the calendar admits it — by mid-March the wiregrass edges are greening and the yards are asking for their first cut of the year. Joiner Creek Greenhouses opens the season with those cuts, clearing winter's growth, resetting the lines along walks and drives, trimming close where the mower has to leave off. Then comes the long middle of the year: mowing week after week, with clippings blown back off the concrete every time. Growth here does not politely stop in August the way it does farther north; it keeps coming until the nights finally cool. A yard held to the same line all season is a quiet accomplishment.
