Out at Manor the pines stand straight and far apart with wiregrass beneath them, and the sky takes up more of the view than the land does — this is the flat country on the shoulder of the Okefenokee. Summer rain arrives fast in Ware County and the grass answers overnight, so visits stay frequent and the work stays ahead of it. There is real pleasure in a cut lawn ringed by longleaf, everything green and squared up under all that sky. Small town, wide horizon, tidy yard.
