Last light in west Georgia runs long and orange, laying itself flat across the lawns of LaGrange until the whole street looks lit from the side. Fire Cuts finishes plenty of days in that light, the final pass made while the first fireflies lift out of the grass along the fence. Mowing, edging, trimming and blowing the walks clean make up the round, kept on a weekly or biweekly rhythm depending on how hard the season is pushing. Grass here can gain an inch between visits in June, so the calendar matters as much as the machine. A yard finished at dusk is worth staying late for, the edges dark and exact, the clippings gone. Around LaGrange and up through Hogansville, that is how the day tends to end.
