Before the storefronts open around Lafayette Square, the light comes in low and level down the block and every blade of grass throws its own small shadow. That is the hour 4H Services goes to work in LaGrange: ramps down, engines up, lines laid straight while the town is still deciding whether to wake. The work is mowing, edging, string trimming and a full blow-down of drives and walks, with bed edging and fresh mulch when a yard asks for it. West Georgia grass grows hard and fast once the heat sets in, so the route keeps moving out toward Hogansville and back down toward West Point without ever really stopping. There is a particular satisfaction in the edge along a sidewalk, that thin dark seam where lawn ends and concrete begins. By the time anyone gathers at the fountain, the yards here are already cut and the truck is two streets over.
