By midday in July, Kite is all heat and shine: flat Johnson County ground, sandy loam beneath a thin turf, loblolly pine standing guard at the edge of every field. CUTS Lawn Care runs through that hour anyway, laying mow lines straight across a lot the way rows run across the land out here. Trimmer work goes close around mailbox posts, well houses and fence corners; edges get cut in along the walk; clippings come off the drive before the last gate closes. Toward evening the heat lets go and a place looks squared away from the road, which is the whole point of the day. Kite is small, and the same work travels easily to Wrightsville, Adrian and the farms in between.
