Jackson sits about halfway between Atlanta and Macon, and the day here starts early — trucks and trailers rolling while fog still lies in the bottoms along the interstate. The Yard Stop is out in that first light, mowing, edging, trimming and clearing walks and drives before the Georgia afternoon turns into something to be endured. Grass in Butts County will run away from you in a wet June, so the schedule holds no matter what the week looks like. The measure of a good stop is simple: even lines, clean edges, nothing left on the concrete. In fall the sweetgums and oaks fill the yards and the leaf hauling takes over for a couple of months. Then it all begins again, and there's something steadying in that.
