January lays Gracewood out in tan and rust — dormant Bermuda, pine straw drifted along the fence lines, camellias doing about all the blooming the county has to offer. The Lawnfather works the off-season anyway, because a lawn that gets cleared in winter comes up even in April. Mowing when the weather offers a warm stretch, edging, trimming, and raking out the straw and leaves that pack down over the crowns. Cold mornings here are bright and dry, the kind where the work goes fast and the yard looks twice as open by noon. Gracewood is the base, with Hephzibah and Augusta a short haul up the road.
