Some yards you learn by their plantings — hydrangeas along the north wall, a pecan throwing shade over half the back, monkey grass edging the walk to the steps. Grandma's boys looks after Gainesville yards like those: mowing and edging, trimming close to the foundation, keeping hedges in shape, weeding and mulching the beds, spreading pine straw, and raking the pecan leaves out of everything come November. There is a particular pleasure in a small yard done thoroughly, where the borders are clean and nothing is left to catch the eye wrong. Evenings in Hall County cool off just enough in September to make the last cut of the day the good one. The porch view is the real measure of the work.
