East Point grows its own ceiling — water oaks and loblolly pines leaning over the bungalow streets off Jefferson Avenue, holding shade through the long Georgia middle of the year. Rod's Lawn Care & Tree Service works underneath that canopy and up inside it, mowing and edging the lawns below, then taking the saw to the limbs a late-afternoon thunderstorm left hanging. There is a particular satisfaction in the hour after the storm moves off toward Hapeville, when the air goes clear and a yard scattered with green branches comes back to order. Grass gets brought down to an even line, beds get cut back from the walk, and the brush and cut wood leave with the truck instead of waiting by the curb. By dusk the porch light falls on nothing out of place.
