The ground around northern Evans County is sandhill soil — pale, quick-draining, unforgiving of neglect and generous to anyone who tends it. Late summer is when a lawn tells the truth here: thin spots surface, the heat settles in for weeks, and a careless cut shows up brown by the next morning. So the work goes to fundamentals: mowing high enough to shade the roots, keeping the blade honest, opening compacted ground so water gets down where it does some good, and holding weeds out of the seams along the drive.
