By late November the Dodge County pines have let down a season's worth of straw, and it lies in drifts against the fence lines and porch steps around Chauncey. The off-season work is straw and leaves pulled off the turf, edges re-opened along drives and walks, the trimmer run through corners while nothing is growing to hide them. Days are short then; the light goes copper around five and the work finishes inside it. Mowing picks back up as soon as the grass answers a warm stretch, which in south Georgia can happen in February. Between the two, the lawns stay in shape, and staying in shape is the entire point of showing up.
