The mountains start where Chatsworth ends: Fort Mountain standing over the town, the Cohuttas rolling north behind it, and yards that simply finish in hardwood forest. Eagle tree services works that edge, trimming crowns back off the house and the driveway and taking down trees that have leaned downhill one winter too many. On a slope a removal is a rope-and-patience job — down in short lengths, lowered where it can be, with the ground beneath left in one piece. The stump comes out afterward, ground below grade so the yard closes over the spot and the mower runs straight through it. In October, with the ridges turning color above town, a clear lot and a well-shaped tree line is a fine thing to leave behind.
