Camak is a crossing first — two rail lines meeting out in the Warren County pines, with a handful of streets that grew up around the meeting and stayed. Lawn Commander works those streets and the sandy red-clay yards that run out from them toward Warrenton and Norwood, where a lawn has to hold its own against pine straw, heat and time. Summer arrives slowly here and leaves late, so the cutting season stretches long and the grass never quite stops asking. There is a plain satisfaction in the last pass of a morning: the stripes lying even, the trimmer having found every fence post and mailbox stem, the clippings blown off the concrete so the walk reads sharp against the green. Small town, one yard at a time, until the light goes long over the tracks.
