Color comes down out of the mountains in October and lands, eventually, on every lawn around Ball Ground. The Grass Guys spend that stretch getting leaves off the turf and out of the bed lines, keeping the grass in light while the days shorten. The rest of the year it is the plain rhythm of mowing, trimming and edging, with the walks and drive blown clean before the truck leaves. Yards here sit among hardwoods and pines, so the cleanup never quite finishes — it simply comes around again, which suits a crew that likes finishing things. A raked-open lawn under bare limbs has a tidiness all its own.
