Early fog comes off the Savannah River and lies in the low yards until the sun clears the levee. Work starts in that gray hour, when the grass is cool and the city is still mostly birds and traffic on the bridge. Mowing, trimming and edging move through the morning; by midday the cut lines are drying pale and the walks are blown clean. Downriver of the Riverwalk the summers run long and the growing season longer, so the year asks for attention nearly all the way around — and it gets it. There is a plain pride in leaving behind a yard that looks like somebody decided about it.
