King GREEN

About King GREEN

By September the Bermuda has stopped racing and the light over Auburn goes long and gold in the late afternoon. That is a fine hour to be mowing — the day's heat easing, the mower laying down its rows across turf that has taken a whole summer of Georgia sun. King GREEN keeps lawns on the Barrow County side of town, out where pasture and hayfield still edge the newer streets: cutting, running the fence lines with a trimmer, holding a straight border along the drive, clearing every clipping off the concrete. Grass tended on a rhythm keeps its color deep into fall here, and turf that stays thick leaves weeds nowhere to settle. When the oaks let go in November there are leaves to gather and beds to clear before the short days arrive. The work is plain and it shows, week after week, in the same few square miles.
