Adrian sits astride a county line on land so level you can watch a rain shower coming for twenty minutes before it gets to you. Spring turns everything at once here — road shoulders, pasture edges and the yards along the old railroad grade all rise together and all want answering. Non like us takes them one at a time: a full cut, string work around posts and porch piers, then a pass with the blower so the walk is bare when the job ends. The mark of a finished yard is a border you can trace with your eye from the mailbox. Adrian and the communities on both sides of the county line are worked through the season.
