Umatilla is the doorway to the Ocala National Forest, and you feel it at the town's northern edge, where the pines and turkey oaks begin and late light comes down through them in long gold bars. Vazquez Landscaping keeps the yards out on that side of the line and all through town, mowing, edging, trimming shrubs back into shape, raking and hauling off whatever the oaks let go. Working the end of the day here has its own reward: the heat letting up, the smell of cut grass and pine settling over a lawn that has just been put right. Beds get their borders back, the grass line meets the drive without a stray blade, and everything touched that afternoon leaves with the truck. It is plain outdoor work in a town made for it.
