Late afternoon on Osprey Avenue in Southside Village, the oaks throw long shadows across the front lawns and the whole street goes the color of honey for about half an hour. Greenscapes likes to finish a day there, running the mower over grass that has been growing since the last rain and edging the walks until the lines are clean. Hedges are brought level, beds are mulched and squared, and the palms and shrubs get trimmed back from the porches. Sarasota's soil is sandy and the summers are demanding, so the work is about coming back often enough that a yard never falls behind. Pulling away with the last of that light on a freshly cut lawn is about as good as this job gets.
