The first October morning that arrives under seventy degrees feels like a gift in this town, and Gillespie Park is where you notice it - crape myrtle bark peeling pale, small front gardens finally catching their breath. Grant's Gardens does its best work in that window: beds turned over and weeded by hand, perennials cut back, roses and shrubs pruned into shape for the cool season ahead. The lawn is mowed and edged around it all, tight to the borders so the planting reads clearly. Fresh mulch goes down last and makes the whole yard look intentional. A cottage garden in Sarasota is never finished, which is a good part of why it is worth tending.
