About Lawnscapes

On a January morning the fog settles low over Sanford's brick streets and turns anything ten feet off into a rumor — then it burns away by nine and the town comes back sharp-edged. Lawnscapes thinks about a yard the way that hour does, in shapes: the lawn's outline, the mass of the shrubs, the way a bed curves toward a front door. The work that gets it there is ordinary enough — mowing, edging, string trimming, hedge trimming, mulch, and clearing off the debris — done with the finished picture in mind. Cut the same lawn a dozen ways and only one of them makes the house look right. Finding that one and holding it week after week is the craft.
