Ramrod Key is a narrow green island in the Lower Keys, coral rock underfoot, Newfound Harbor on one side and the shallow flats on the other, and the trade wind never entirely quits. Eco Green Garden Center works the island's lawns with salt air in the equation — mowing, edging along drives and paths, trimming around buttonwood and thatch palm, clearing cuttings and blown debris. Soil runs shallow here and every green thing is a small act of persistence, which makes a level, tended yard something worth stopping to look at. Late in the day the light comes off the water sideways and lands flat on the grass, and the whole island seems to slow down. Between the Overseas Highway and the shoreline, keeping a yard neat is honest island work.
